Neoclassical

Neoclassical style flourished primarily between 1750 and 1850 as a deliberate reaction against the ornate, playful Rococo style. It emphasized order, clarity, moral virtue, and the classical ideals of ancient Greece and Rome. Key characteristics include clean lines, idealized proportions, calm and dignified expressions, classical drapery and attire, marble-like skin tones, and restrained, symmetrical compositions that convey nobility, rationality, and timelessness.

Neoclassicism became especially prominent in France during the late 18th century, particularly around the French Revolution and Napoleonic era. It quickly spread across Europe and America, where it symbolized republican virtues, heroism, and the rational spirit of the Enlightenment.

In America, the Neoclassical Federal style dominated portraiture. Artists such as Charles Willson Peale created iconic portraits of the Founding Fathers and Revolutionary leaders in this dignified, restrained aesthetic.

Prominent Neoclassical painters include:

• Jacques-Louis David: The undisputed leader of French Neoclassicism, celebrated for his powerful, politically charged portraits and history paintings, including many iconic depictions of Napoleon.
• Charles Willson Peale: Prominent American artist best known for his realistic and dignified portraits of George Washington and other Founding Fathers.
