Late Baroque

Late Baroque is a rich, elegant, dramatic style that represents the final flowering of the Baroque movement. It is characterized by masterful chiaroscuro lighting, luxurious fabrics and textures, refined elegance, and a strong sense of presence and poise. While retaining the grandeur and emotional depth of earlier Baroque, Late Baroque introduces softer modeling, luminous highlights, and more intimate yet dignified compositions. Late Baroque portraiture flourished from the 1710s through the 1760s, overlapping with the final decades of the broader Baroque era. It originated primarily in France and spread across Europe, particularly to Italy, Austria, Germany, Russia, and England. The style remained prominent through the reign of Louis XV and began to give way to Neoclassicism in the 1770s–1780s.

French and European aristocracy embraced Late Baroque for its ability to convey both sophistication and authority. Influential Late Baroque portrait artists included:
