Art Nouveau
Art Nouveau is often described as the first modern decorative style of the industrial age. It emphasized flowing lines, asymmetry, and organic inspiration drawn from nature (plants, flowers, vines, tendrils, insect wings, flowing hair, and waves).
While it emerged and flourished during the Belle Époque period (c. 1871–1914), it is not synonymous with the era itself. Art Nouveau was a specific, intentional aesthetic movement that deliberately broke from 19th-century historicism, eclecticism, and academic rigidity. Art Nouveau artists and designers explicitly aimed for a "new art" (hence the name), and it has its own clear visual language, international spread, and legacy — separate from the more general "Belle Époque glamour" seen in society portraits or fashion.
Art Nouveau flourished primarily from the 1890s to around 1910–1914, with a peak dring the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. Art Nouveau largely ended with World War I.
Art Nouveau artists practiced in many areas of design including architecture, metals, jewelry, and advertising. In portraiture, Art Nouveau appeared more in posters, illustrations, and symbolic figures than in traditional oil portraits.
Two prominent artists who exemplified this style are the inspiration for our BTC Portraits Art Nouveau style:
Jules Chéret (French) — his style evolved from Rococo-inspired influences, 18th-century Venetian masters, and Japanese prints. He was a master of Belle Époque poster art first and foremost. His peak activity (1870s–1890s) predates the full crystallization of Art Nouveau around 1895–1900, so some historians view him as a transitional figure who bridged late Victorian/early modern graphics to the full Art Nouveau aesthetic.
Alphonse Mucha (Czech) — a Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist who became one of the most iconic figures of the Art Nouveau movement. He rose to international fame in 1894–1895 when his poster for Sarah Bernhardt's play Gismonda exploded in popularity, launching "le style Mucha" as synonymous with Art Nouveau's flowing lines, ornate borders, ethereal female figures, and harmonious integration of text and image. His work—spanning theatrical posters, magazine illustrations, jewelry designs, and decorative panels—celebrated idealized beauty, nature-inspired motifs, and sensuous elegance. He influenced generations from Belle Époque advertising to later psychedelic art and manga.
